In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic began to disrupt life for nearly every individual and business in Hawai‘i. The public health crisis brought on many changes to how we all operate daily, and, likewise, Hawai‘i Foodbank was forced to make many adjustments to its food distribution models. One innovative solution was the cultivation of a new partnership with Hawai‘i Farm Bureau. This initiative provided immediate economic support to local farmers while also distributing healthy food products to communities in need.
Working for Hawai‘i Foodbank, I had the opportunity to help document the story of Huang’s Green Leaf Products, which was one of the participating farms. Despite the challenges surrounding COVID-19, the local Wai‘anae farm creatively shifted operations to provide continued sustenance in multiple forms — jobs for their 35 employees and food for Hawai‘i's hungry families. The photographic series was designed to have an editorial feel with careful selection of composition to provide texture, scale and personality.
The campaign is being honored with multiple 2021 Pele Award from the American Advertising Federation for the categories of Color Photography and Photography Campaign.
